Yakikiri (grilled paulownia) grain pillow
Are you sleeping soundly every night?
Do you have trouble falling asleep, wake up feeling unrested, feel constantly tired, or have stiff shoulders?
Have you ever wondered why you can't sleep soundly? Is this your situation?
The cause might be your pillow.
There are many different types of pillows.
"Urethane pillows are not breathable and make my head hot..."
"Pipe pillows make my neck tired..."
Many people can't find a pillow that fits and end up becoming "pillow nomads."
For those seeking a comfortable pillow, we highly recommend trying the "Yakikiri (grilled paulownia) grain pillow," developed by the third generation of craftsmen at Wako, a company with a long history of manufacturing paulownia chests.
Yakikiri (grilled paulownia) grain pillow" Feature 1
Adopts a filling system that allows the shape to be freely adjusted
Most of the pillows currently in vogue are designed with internal partitions to average out body shapes and sleeping positions. However, isn't it best to have a pillow that can change its shape according to each person's body type and usage at any given time? With this in mind, we created a simple "filling-type" pillow by filling a bag-shaped cover with paulownia grains.
Not only can you adjust the amount of paulownia grains inside to your liking, but the grains also flow within the cover to naturally fit each body and posture. Whether you're sleeping, lying down to read a book, or using it during stretches, this versatile pillow will transcend the concept of a "pillow" and become an indispensable part of your daily life.
Furthermore, the inner cover uses the safe material "Pashima®," made of medical-grade absorbent cotton and gauze, while the outer cover is made of "Kyoto double-layer gauze," focusing on breathability.
Yakikiri (grilled paulownia) grain pillow" Feature 2
Enhances appeal with the traditional technique of "yakikiri" (grilled paulownia)
Yakikiri" is a traditional technique used in making paulownia chests, where the surface of the paulownia wood is charred with fire, giving it a blackened finish. By applying this "Yakikiri" technique, we have succeeded in softening the feel of the grains against your head and reducing mold and bacteria.
Furthermore, the paulownia grains are not uniform in shape; they are irregular, ranging from a few millimeters in size, some round and some angular. This irregularity creates spaces between the grains, which provides excellent breathability and heat retention. These spaces allow excess heat and moisture to escape, ensuring a comfortable sleep.

Relax both mind and body with the unique scent of paulownia
To ensure safety and peace of mind, we do not use any paints, fragrances, or antibacterial agents. This is because paulownia wood naturally possesses antibacterial and deodorizing effects, which have been confirmed through various tests. Additionally, charred paulownia wood emits a faint, sweet scent unique to paulownia. This natural aroma gently soothes your tired mind and body, leading to a restful and comfortable sleep.

Technology
Various values created by a safe process
While there is a risk of pests lurking in natural pillows, paulownia wood has natural insect repellents such as tannin, sesamin, and paulonin that keep pests at bay.
While some natural woods contain chemicals such as formaldehyde, which can cause sick building syndrome, paulownia wood is virtually free of such chemicals.
In addition, there are very few reports of allergic reactions to paulownia, making paulownia an excellent material that can be used with peace of mind.
Paulownia wood has excellent moisture absorption and desorption properties, absorbing moisture instantly and dissipating it quickly.
However, the disadvantage of paulownia is that it is a soft wood, and its fibers tend to swell when moistened, which increases friction and makes the grains not slide at all, resulting in a very lumpy and hard pillow, and it also absorbs odors easily, making it unsuitable for use as a pillow in its raw, white wood form.
Therefore, the paulownia wood specialist chose the following process,
The process of "YAKIKI-KIRIZAI" (burnt paulownia wood) greatly reduces the water content, suppresses water absorption, and tightens the surface, making it more slippery and softening the pillow's head contact. The charcoal attached to the grains strongly decomposes unpleasant odors, and the far-infrared rays and negative ions strongly reduce mold and bacteria.
The irregular shape of the grains, which can be round with a few millimeters in diameter or square with corners, ensures that there are no gaps between the grains, making it easy to create the right fit for you with a light shake of the hand or head.
This space has excellent ventilation performance, allowing heat and moisture from the pillow to escape.
However, ventilation does not make it too cold, and the low thermal conductivity of paulownia wood allows it to reflect temperature instantly. This means that your own body heat is reflected and kept warm by the paulownia wood grains and the air layer. Since the body temperature is almost constant at 36.5 degrees throughout the year, the temperature is not easily affected by the seasons, and it is not too cold in winter and not too stuffy in summer, so you will always feel dry. The lower layer of the pillow is closer to the atmospheric temperature such as room temperature, which is lower than body temperature, and if the pillow becomes too hot, it can be reset by turning it inside out. This burnt paulownia wood processing produces a natural fragrance, and its subtle sweet scent, which is not too assertive, promotes relaxation.
With a commitment to safety, we do not use any paints, fragrances, or other antibacterial agents or other chemical solvents to harden the material in our paulownia wood crushed products. We wash and dry them under running water, and provide them with an additive-free finish that takes advantage of the natural benefits of the paulownia wood material itself. The YAKIGIRI-Tsubu Pillow has the ideal functionality required of pillows, both in terms of the material and the process, and we have been able to offer a variety of values as a new pillow material that supports a healthy sleep.
Functionality
The reason why bread in a paulownia box is resistant to mold and rice in a paulownia rice bin lasts longer is thought to be not only because paulownia wood controls moisture, but also because of its ph value and the effects of far infrared rays and negative ions. It is generally believed that far-infrared rays "inhibit bacteria and promote metabolism, which is effective in preventing and recovering from fatigue and stiff shoulders," and negative ions "inhibit and inactivate bacteria and viruses. Paulownia wood can further amplify far-infrared rays and negative ions by burning it.
In fact, the antimicrobial properties of Yakikiri-bushi were evaluated by the Japan Food Analysis Center after about one year of use.
- Number of molds Test results Negative
- General bacteria count Test results Less than 300
Low moisture content for improved sleeping comfort
White paulownia wood grains and burnt paulownia wood grains were subjected to humidity control at room temperature of 40°C and 30% humidity for 17 hours, followed by moisture absorption at room temperature of 40°C and 90% humidity for 24 hours, and then continued to release moisture at 40°C. The moisture content during this process was measured.
As shown in the graph, the moisture content was lowered and moisture absorption was successfully suppressed by applying burnt paulownia wood. The result is a light and comfortable sleeping surface that does not feel damp at any time.
Hazardous Substance Inspection
Even though wood is natural, there are cases where it contains formaldehyde. It is not good for your health if there are harmful substances in the area closest to your body when you sleep.
There is a Japanese safety standard called F☆☆☆☆ (Forster).
The F☆☆☆☆ standard requires that the average radiation level be less than 0.3 mg/L and the maximum 0.4 mg/L.
Therefore, we actually tested the emissivity of paulownia wood. The measurement standard used for the test was in accordance with the "Japanese Agricultural Standards for Laminated Wood".
The results were reassuring. 0.01 (mg/L), far below the standard, and as close to zero as possible.
