All About Paulownia Kimono Storage
Preserve Your Precious Kimonos for Generations
In Japan, paulownia kimono storage have long been the go-to solution for preserving kimonos.
Paulownia wood naturally protects your treasured kimonos from humidity, fire, insects, and mold. Our customizable storage solutions adapt to your space and the number of kimonos and accessories you need to store.
3 Benefits of Paulownia Storage

Benefit 1
Excellent Humidity Control and Mold Resistance
Paulownia chests allow for proper air circulation, with the wood naturally expanding and contracting to regulate humidity. Inside a closed paulownia chest, the humidity level remains around 50%, even during Japan’s humid rainy season, fluctuating only by about +5–7%. This precise humidity control helps prevent mold growth, making paulownia chests ideal for storing kimono.
How Humidity Affects Kimono:
- Musty odor
- Discoloration
- Loss of luster
- Damage to fibers

Benefit 2
Natural Insect Repellent Properties
Paulownia wood has a fresh, distinctive scent that contains natural compounds like sesamin, paulonin, and glimenol. These components help deter wood-eating and fabric-damaging insects, offering built-in protection.
Additionally, paulownia chests are crafted to minimize warping and twisting, ensuring drawers close tightly. This prevents moisture buildup, reduces the risk of mold, and keeps insects out. Even after years of use, the wood maintains its high level of airtightness, making it a long-lasting storage solution.

Benefit 3
Exceptional Durability
Compared to other types of chests, paulownia chests are highly durable and designed to be airtight. Even if the wood becomes scratched or discolored over time, it can be resurfaced and maintained, allowing the chest to be used for over 100 years.
Additionally, Paulownia wood is highly resistant to heat. There have even been instances where well-crafted Paulownia chests remained intact during fires, protecting the items inside.

Kimono Storage Tips
FAQs
Can I store the kimono directly in the drawer?
It is highly recommended that you wrap your kimono in tatoushi paper (traditional Japanese washi paper) before storing it in the drawer. This helps protect the fabric from dust, humidity, and discoloration.
What Are Tatoshi Paper & Kimono Hangers?
Tatoushi Paper
Tatoushi paper is a unique wrapping paper for kimono, essential for preserving your garments in pristine condition. It helps prevent dust, moisture, and discoloration, ensuring your kimono remains in top shape for years.
Kimono hanger
A kimono hanger is a specially designed hanger used to store and maintain kimonos properly. Unlike regular clothing hangers, it is crafted to preserve the shape and fabric of a kimono without causing wrinkles or damage.
Should I use mothballs or insect repellents?
While the natural properties of paulownia wood help deter insects, using mothballs or insect repellents can provide additional protection. However, avoid placing them directly on the fabric.
