Our Sobachoko Display Shelf Was Featured in a Magazine

Our custom-made Sobachoko display shelf was featured in the Japanese cuisine magazine Wa no Bi Shoku no Bi Onkochishin vol.4 (Seibundo Shinkosha).

That said, this feature was only possible because of the beautiful world created by Hanamatsurigama. Our shelf was introduced as one part of that space and story.

About Hanamatsurigama

Hanamatsurigama is the studio of Hizen porcelain artist Kensuke Fujiyoshi. The studio is run by the two of them: the maker, Kensuke Fujiyoshi, and the okami, Fujiyuri.

Hizen porcelain refers to the ceramic culture that has continued for more than 400 years in northern Kyushu, including famous traditions such as Arita ware and Imari ware. Within that long history, Hanamatsurigama continues to express its own unique style.

A Sobachoko Shelf Still in Use After 5.5 Years

We delivered this shelf in August 2020.

That was already about five and a half years ago.

Of course, it is always wonderful to hear “This is beautiful” right after delivery. But when a piece continues to be used for years, remains part of the space, and is then featured in a magazine, it feels different.

To us, that is proof that this furniture has truly fulfilled its role.

A Sobachoko Shelf Created Through Custom Order

This Sobachoko display shelf was created as a custom order for Hanamatsurigama.

It needed to do two things at once: display more than 100 sobachoko cups at a glance, and above all, present each piece beautifully.

To achieve both goals, we adjusted the thickness of each divider and the overall balance down to the millimeter.

Furniture Should Not Be Too Assertive

The furniture should not dominate the space. But at the same time, it should clearly enhance the quality of the atmosphere.

That was the position we kept in mind while making this shelf.

Looking at the magazine photos, I feel that it fits naturally into the space.

It looks as though it has always belonged there. And yet, it quietly elevates the entire impression of the room.

When furniture settles in like that, it gives us a sense of relief as makers.

Furniture That Becomes Complete Over Time

Another interesting thing about this shelf is that it feels as though it becomes complete while being used.

When you see an empty square, you naturally want to fill it. As the collection grows, the scenery changes too.

Over these five and a half years, I feel that this shelf has gradually grown along with the collection.

In Closing

This magazine feature was made possible by the world of Hanamatsurigama. We are honestly grateful that our work could be part of it.

Furniture does not need to stand out too much. But we do want to deliver pieces that can be used for many years and continue to support the value of what they hold.

This feature reminded us of that once again.
